A sprinter becomes a family camper

Adrian and Caro already had a camper. An old Mercedes 310, a former fire department emergency vehicle, which they lovingly converted piece by piece into their first comfortable camper. However, with the birth of her child, a few requirements for the mobile vehicle changed. There should be more safety and comfort if the next generation is also on board from now on. So the two of them spotted a good used Mercedes Sprinter L2H2. The perfect base for new adventures with the family. The two turned to Waldbart for the expansion. They already had very clear ideas about the concept of their future camper.
Waldbart's hands-on workshop - We accompany you from planning to implementation
Now the already very well thought-out concept that the two of them were planning should of course be implemented accordingly. There were open questions here and there, and some technical details regarding feasibility were still unclear. Where and with what should the expansion take place? Who to ask about the details? The whole concept also had to be implemented cleanly and as safely as possible, after all, the baby also had to go on board. Adrian turned to Waldbart Holzmanufaktur . In the hands-on workshop at Waldbart, your project will be accompanied from planning to implementation under expert guidance. Waldbart provides a workshop, tools and know-how and supports you in all matters. You decide how much and what you take on and when and where the professionals step in.
Final planning issues have been clarified
Before construction could start, there were final details that needed to be clarified. Layout, feasibility of your own ideas and technical possibilities. The concept was adjusted a little here and there and then the Sprinter camper conversion could finally start in the workshop in Berlin. Adrian decided to take care of the electrical system in the vehicle, while Waldbart took over the planning and construction of the wooden interior, the bodywork and the installation of the add-on parts. All required materials were then ordered and the project could begin.
The preparatory work - rust protection, insulation and felt
Before the actual expansion could begin, the Sprinter was first completely emptied and thoroughly cleaned. As with all used commercial vehicles, there were some signs of wear that should be removed beforehand. The entire interior was emptied, all cladding and attachments were removed, the cargo area was cleaned and given new paint. The cavities were then insulated with darning wool and all surfaces with Arma. In the rear area the sheet metal was additionally covered with felt.
The interior work at the Sprinter camper conversion in Berlin
Now the actual camper expansion began. The individual parts were manufactured and installed piece by piece. Waldbart developed an extendable cantilever construction for the bed. An extendable table was integrated below the bed surface. Two benches on the outside and a kitchenette with an integrated refrigerator and solid real oak worktop rounded off the interior area. Instead of the original paneling, new real oak paneling was installed in the camper. There was plenty of storage space underneath the bed in the trunk. When choosing the bed height, the storage options for strollers etc. were also taken into account. And so that no one has to crawl under the bed, the entire storage space was designed to be completely extendable using heavy-duty pull-outs with a load capacity of 500kg. In the roof, the Sprinter had skylights with integrated insect protection and sun protection above the kitchenette and above the bed. The on-board electronics have a starter and an additional battery. Both are charged and monitored separately via intelligent charging electronics. A solar panel installed on the roof supplies the refrigerator with sufficient electricity and charges the batteries with appropriate prioritization. A 230V fixed power connection also supplies the charging and on-board electronics if necessary.
All installations were screwed and countered through the floor panel. Inside, threaded sleeves were mounted in the sheet metal parts to which the furniture was properly screwed. The electrical network is equipped with fuse blocks and FI switches. A subsequent inspection by the TÜV with motorhome approval confirmed that the work was carried out neatly, including all safety-related requirements.
This meant that nothing stood in the way of the family's future adventures in the new, comfortable camper. Since the conversion, the three of them have driven more than 10,000 km in their camper. A further inspection with us showed that the implementation was successful and clean. All built-in parts are still stable, all mechanisms such as door hinges and locks work perfectly, nothing sticks or rattles. Long-term test passed!
We wish you a safe journey and many great experiences with the rolling home 😊.
