Ford Galaxy camper conversion at Waldbart in Berlin

Why do you convert a family van into a camper?

Campsite construction in a Ford Galaxy
Ford Galaxy camper conversion

Moritz from Schöneiche near Berlin fulfilled his dream of a compact camper. Rather unusual and not so common with camper conversions As can be seen, a Ford Galaxy family van served as the basis for the planned expansion.

Moritz is a photographer and travels across Germany in his car. Always with you, your photo equipment and the usual souvenirs when you travel. Finally being independent and simply spending the night in a motorhome was a long dream for the young photographer. However, purchasing a new larger van was out of the question; the Galaxy was flexible, mobile in cities and you could always find a parking bag. But converting a Ford Galaxy into a camper? Why not, the rear and trunk area offers lots of possibilities for work and travel.

Planning the Ford Galaxy camper expansion in Berlin

Waldbart founder Denny König relies on CAD-supported construction when planning complex projects in order to localize possible problem areas in advance but also to get a visual impression of the project. The additional effort in the planning phase accelerates subsequent construction immensely. Moritz was also quickly familiarized with the CAD program and worked diligently on the design. A very precise picture of the future expansion and the later sectional dimensions for the installations emerged. König supports you with the choice of material and technical equipment such as electrics or sinks with water reservoirs. After all open questions had been clarified, the materials were ordered and implementation could begin.

Production of the camper extension in the Waldbart wood factory

Moritz decided on a two-row extension made of screen printing material. On the driver's side, a continuous row of flat furniture serves as a bed, while a second row on the passenger's side contains the kitchenette with sink. A corridor remains free in the middle for the necessary freedom of movement. All boxes and cupboards are closed by flaps and doors. If necessary, a precisely fitting shelf between the two rows connects the bed and kitchen area. This creates a 200 x 90cm lying surface for sleeping. The spare wheel well, which was hidden by the floor panel, was made accessible through a suitable cutout. The last two cabinet modules can be quickly dismantled in order to access the openings behind them for the lamps in the rear of the vehicle at any time. The paneling parts installed in the Galaxy should remain undamaged and preserved, which is why some of the furniture was custom-tailored with a number of angles and mitres. To be on the safe side, the individual parts were repeatedly checked for accuracy.

The camper expansion went well. What is often underestimated and takes a lot of time are, among other things, the many small detailed works. Hinges, latches and fasteners must be neatly fastened and attached. That just takes time. Moritz was also amazed. But nothing rattles later and is neatly stored in the locked boxes. Ultimately, the removal should also be safe and nothing could fly loose through the vehicle interior in an emergency. Denny pays particular attention to this. All installations are screwed into the base plate several times with threaded screws and coupled together again. The base plate itself was attached to the vehicle floor on extremely strong aluminum profiles, which in turn are screwed into the body panel.

The finished camper conversion

Around 36 hours of work in the workshop later, the Galaxy camper conversion was completed. Both Moritz and Denny were happy with the result. A few small things were still outstanding, but Moritz wants to finish them later on his own. Because now the first thing on the agenda is a trip to the family in the north and then to Scandinavia. We are already looking forward to the first live photos and the travel report.

Waldbart thanks you for the exciting project and wishes you a safe journey.
